P a g e|1The years after the Civil War from about 1865-1877 are known as the reconstructionperiod. Historians used the term Reconstruction because it was the period when the federalgovernment brought back the seceded states to the Union. Which wasn’t a very easy task, thefederal Government had to deal with many issues. One of these issues was how to deal with thestates as they rejoined the Union. This was an issue because with each new state came a new setof problems. Another issue that came about was how southern whites should be treated. Peoplethought that the whites in the south should be treated a certain way to protect themselves andtheir families from the blacks. Another big problem that occurred was how to deal with the freedslaves after the 13thamendment was passed. The 13thamendment gave the freed slaves rights andsome people weren’t too keen on the idea.
