Culley 1 Desales Culley Jr. EGL 1020 LD09 Essay 1 February 21, 2016 The Yellow Wallpaper, and the Importance of Self-Expression Self-expression. The expression of one’s feelings, thoughts, or ideas. Self-expression can be very important in a person’s life. The inability to express one’s feelings, can lead to depression or in the case of the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, insanity. Figuring out what the story is about will help identify the theme related to self-expression and how this theme demonstrates the importance of self-expression. Even so, its very important to learn about the author of any story. The author of “The Yellow Wallpaper” is female author named Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Charlotte Perkins Gilman was born July 3, 1860, in Hartford, Connecticut. One of her famous stories “The Yellow Wallpaper”, was published in 1892 (Bio.com). In 1884, she married an artist named, Charles Stetson. According to Bio.com, “ Sometime during her decade-long marriage to Stetson, Gilman experienced a severe depression and underwent a series of unusual treatments for it.” Some people (including myself) believe that this situation largely influenced her story “The Yellow Wallpaper”. She unfortunately committed suicide August 17, 1935. Now that some light has been shed on the author, the next subject can be discussed. The authors connection with the story was mentioned because it helps show how one of the themes is related to the thesis stated earlier. To help show what that theme is all about, a general summary of the story will be given.
