Running Head: Why Bullies Suck 2 Bullying is typically when someone uses superior strength or influence to intimidate or control another person. I personally feel that bullying is wrong. Some tend to say that it can mold someone into a tougher person. Although this may sometimes happen for people, that doesn’t make bullying a good thing. It can traumatize people for life. This argument research paper will go in depth on the two sides of bullying and solutions for it. Some people look at bullying in a positive way. They feel that it can help children gain needed social skills and prepare them for the rough world. In a study of American children aged 11 and 12, researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), compared those who stood up to aggressors with those who did not. According to the UCLA researchers, children who returned hostility with hostility were seen to be more mature, and those who stood up to the bullies were also shown to be more socially competent. While these results didn’t show that it was particularly healthy to be bullied, it showed that those experiences could help children learn conflict resolution. It will also show them that not everyone in the world is nice. The oppressors have also brought about some positive results from bullying. Researchers at Duke University Medical Center (DUMC) conducted test on 1,420 children who were followed up on from the age 9 to 21. Throughout the many tests that DUMC conducted they discovered that bullies showed lower levels of inflammation, and that victims showed higher levels. Those low levels in the bullies meant that they were at less risks to endure health issues caused from stress such as heart problems. This shows t something positive comes from being the oppressor. Even so this doesn’t make bullying something that should be done. You can get these low inflammatory levels without making someone endure and mental, emotional, or physical pain. With that being said, there are a lot of negatives to bullying.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
