Write algebraic expressions for the distances each person ran. Kevin ran x miles. Steve ran x­4 miles. (because kevin ran four more miles than steve) Together they ran 26 miles. 3. Write an equation that can help you solve the problem. x + x­4 = 26 4. Solve the equation. x + x­4 = 26 gather like terms x+x = 26+4 I added 4 to both sides. I combined like terms 2x = 30 divide through by 2 x = 15 Kevin ran 15 miles and steve ran 11 miles. 5.
