Jael Teora Modern U.S. History 8/22/16 The Depression lasted a decade, beginning in 1929 and ending during World War II. Industrial production plummeted. Unemployment soared. Families suffered. Marriage rates fell. The contraction began in the United States and spread around the globe. The Depression was the longest and deepest downturn in the history of the United States and the modern industrial economy. Living through the Great Depression was no small feat. People think that the recession of 2008 was bad, but people from our generation don’t know what it’s like to have 25% unemployment and families losing everything. The Great Depression left a great impression on their thoughts, their styles, and their habits. Many of them hoard money, become pack rats, and in general have trouble parting with anything that may possibly be of use down the road. And who can blame them?
