Paranoia Schizophrenia and John NashGabby Ethier“Thinking about Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behavior” defines paranoia schizophrenia as a mental illness “characterized by delusions, particularly delusions of grandeurand persecution. Auditory and other hallucinations often support the delusions.” This disease isone of the most complex and even disturbing, with many factors, varied symptoms, and behaviors. Patients with this disorder can struggle with knowing what is reality and what is a hallucination.Symptoms of paranoia schizophrenia can vary from mild to severe, with the most severeand iconic symptoms being the auditory hallucinations. Those who suffer from this mental illness will often “hear” voices in their heads. These voices are often malevolent and can lead a patient to be violent, and especially paranoid. Many of these patients believe that their families or friends are plotting against them, or that they are part of a conspiracy. These people also commonly suffer from social and behavioral problems, such as mood swings, violence, and anxiety. They can also suffer from suicidal thoughts or behaviors. There are many causes of schizophrenia. In several cases, it is a genetic disease passed down, yet scientists are unsure of which genes in the body are responsible for this disorder.
