Introduction Dissociative Identity Disorder is defined as “a severe condition in which two or more distinct identities, or personality states, are present in—and alternately take control of—an individual.” (psychologytoday.com) Previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder, this mental illness was one of the earliest to be studied, with the first serious studies conducted in 1883 in France by Pierre Janet, who cared for a woman named Leonie who had three distinctly different personalities. The first name for this disorder was first hysterical neurosis, named in 1968.

Symptoms An individual exhibits two or more distinct personalities These personalities have been reported to be of different sexes, ages, and physicalities. Individuals can suffer from dissociative amnesia--a gap in a person’s memory, sometimes in everyday events, and sometimes in important personal information.
