2 Page 3 Sampling with typical microscopes: Aperturing ¾ Selection of the sampling area is by a set of IR opaque knife-edge aperture blades Usually located at the focus of the 6x magnification Cassegrain optic Cassegrain = mirror lenses ¾ The efficiency of masking by the aperture will determine the extent to which a “clean” spectrum of a sample can be obtained without contributions from the surrounding matrix ¾ The aperture defines area sampled ¾ In practice the aperture does not completely block the IR radiation which has passed around the area of interest some is allowed through by diffraction Page 4 In imaging/mapping, the detectors define the area to be analyzed. Scientists use the word “imaging” generically to also discuss mapping. However, the image-producing mechanism is technically different.
