An EncounterBildungsromanAn Encounter is a short story by the Irish novelist James Joyce, which exemplifies thetheme of bildungsroman or coming of age when two innocent kids take a day off tohave some fun, but end up experiencing a really unconventional situation. The theme ispresented through the use of rhetorical devices such as allusions, juxtaposition, andepiphany.Bildungsroman is defined as a “type of novel concerned with the education, development, and maturing of a young protagonist”. Allusions are employed throughoutthe story in order to exemplify this coming-of-age, which the characters undergo in theirbizarre encounter. The first allusions we find in the story are concerning some comicbooks that Joe Dillion –their friend who introduced them to the Wild West– hadrecommended them. The comic books mentioned are: The Union Jack, Pluck, and TheHalfpenny Marvel.
