An Encounter Bildungsroman An Encounter is a short story by the Irish novelist James Joyce, which exemplifies the theme of bildungsroman or coming of age when two innocent kids take a day off to have some fun, but end up experiencing a really unconventional situation. The theme is presented through the use of rhetorical devices such as allusions, juxtaposition, and epiphany. Bildungsroman is defined as a “type of novel concerned with the education, development, and maturing of a young protagonist”. Allusions are employed throughout the story in order to exemplify this coming-of-age, which the characters undergo in their bizarre encounter. The first allusions we find in the story are concerning some comic books that Joe Dillion –their friend who introduced them to the Wild West– had recommended them. The comic books mentioned are:  The Union Jack, Pluck, and The Halfpenny Marvel.
