Collapse While in high school, one of my favorite history and government teachers impacted my classmates and myself by using a teaching method I had never experienced before. This method is defined as Socratic Seminar, demonstrated from Socrates. According to a study by Jennifer R. Mangrum, “Socratic seminars are structured conversations about selected texts and the important ideas imbedded within them” (Mangrum 2010). We would be given a topic or a political issue and then have a few minutes to write down some ideas. After having a limited time to think and process our thoughts, the class would rearrange the room by creating a circle with our chairs and desks. My teacher would ask a question pertaining to the said topic and each student would voice his or her opinion and thoughts. This Socratic seminar method allowed each of us to first think and then process our thoughts out loud with one another. One student would have a thought and then another would either agree with more supportive detail or even counter argue. Our teacher
