Language is a big way that we communicate in all languages and subjects. Learning how to count and recognizing numbers in the United States poses as a challenge for some students due to the fact that students have to learn 28 English words in order to use the traditional counting method (Sousa, 2015, p.87). Sousa (2015) also says that If the students use the method modeled after some Asian languages such as Chinese and Japanese, this method only requires just 10 different wordsto count from 1 to 100, instead of the 28. This system is easier and more logical and gives students a deeper understanding of our base ten system (p.87).I tried this system just because I love to try new things especially when it comes to math. I did a mini lesson on the numbers from the chart and I provided each child a copy of the chart to use and I told them it was the Chinese hundred’s chart and we were going to learn how to use their hundreds chart and then they had to decide which one was easier to use our traditional hundreds chart or the Asian culture chart, but before we started they had to decide which one they thought would be easiest just by looking at both of the hundreds chart.
