The Synthesis of Magnesium Oxide
The empirical formula of a chemical compound was found by roasting metallic magnesium in air. The
percentage of magnesium was found to be 64.96% and the percentage of oxygen was found to be 35.04%
and the empirical formula was determined to be MgO.
Observing synthesis allows us to calculate the empirical formula of a compound. In this experiment we
were able to determine the empirical formula of metallic magnesium by roasting it to determine its oxy-
gen uptake. With that data, along with the Atomic Theory of matter, we were then able to termite the per-
centages of magnesium and oxygen in the compound and therefore were able to determine its empirical
• Clean crucible, heat it up and let it cool until the weight is constant.
• Add 1 tsp. of magnesium turnings to the crucible, heat it up, and let it cool.
• Add ten drops of water to the oxide and heat until the water is evaporated.
