Austin Varner ENG 104 Professor Cortina January 28, 2008 The Match It was a cloudy day. The bell had just sounded and school was out for the day. Most of the kids would go home to sit on their fat, blubbery rumps and do absolutely nothing for the remainder of the day. I never understood that. The whole laziness thing that is. Maybe that’s why I was so good at wrestling. Ruben and I were captains of the high school varsity wrestling team. We were the ones who carried the team on our shoulders, the ones who the rest of the team looked up to. That felt good. Anyways, it was raining that day. Not just any kind of raining, but cold, hard, wet raining. Ruben and I would always meet each other under the old, rickety bleachers after class, and today was no different. We were both drenched by the time we walked to the “team” room. That’s what Coach called it. The “team” room. Really it was just the weight room. We were always the first ones there. Our team was aloud thirty minutes from when the bell rang before we had to be there. Being captains of the team, both of us figured we could always use this time to better our skills before the matches. And that’s what we did. Coach was already in the room when we got there. Most of the time we would beat him there, but not today. I think he was nervous. He was an older man, maybe early
