Introduction to MicroscopesIntroductionMicroscopy is the process of inspecting specimens using a microscope. Microscopes areuseful because they magnify very tiny organisms or cells that could not otherwise be viewed bythe human eye. The different types of microscopes that will be studied include the dissectionmicroscope (or stereoscope), the light compound microscope, and the electron microscope. Thedifference between these various types of microscopes is their resolving power (BIOL 1506 LabManuel). Resolving power is the ability of a microscope or telescope to measure the angularseparation of images that are close together (Lovett). The dissection microscope or stereoscope is used when examining entire objects ororganisms at low power. Generally, the organisms are visible to the naked eye, but themicroscope gives a closer look. Its magnifying power ranges from 12.8X to 56X (BIOL 1506
