Emely Gallegos Rewards Harm People Have you ever wondered what motivates us? Why we remain focused on some tasks and others are simply ignored? In today's world in which we live, we are in a constant evolution of circumstances that often plunge us into inertia. The path of inertia is clear and concise: we are carried away by circumstances and acting just routinely. Most people believe that the best way to motivate is to use rewards like money, but in his book DRIVE: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us , through research, experimental and actual cases, Daniel H. Pink shows us that what really works is the intrinsic motivation. Rewards and money incentives often can harm people, because it can diminish performance, crush creativity and can crowd out good behavior. Motivation is what causes us to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge (Cherry, 2015). One of the most common ways to motivate someone to do something is to use the principle of reward and punishment; organizations all over the world use these principles to motivate their employees and increase work engagement, which often doesn’t work and sometimes diminish performance. To illustrate, we can take the experiment realized in Madurai, India. They offered three types of rewards for reaching certain performance levels in several games: small reward for the first, medium reward for the second and a huge reward for the third.
