Math 787: Preparation for Algebra Qualifying Exam, Summer 2008. Instructor: Roy Joshua, Office MW 604. E-mail: joshua@ math.ohio-state.edu We will try to adopt the following schedule: Lectures, MWF 1 hour each (instead of 48 minutes) Recitation by TA either Tuesday or Thursday : 1 hour. You will have a practice exam each week for 1 hour on Fridays based on the material and problems discussed during the previous days. In addition you will have weekly homework problems that need to be turned in to the TA during recitations. There are 4 main areas that you will need to focus on: Group Theory, Ring Theory, Linear Algebra and Field (Galois) Theory and we will try to spend approximately two weeks each on each of these main topics. 1
