Choon Liang Tan 02.18.08 CHM343 Lab Report 4 Identification of the Components of Unknown Mixture By Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry Name: Choon Liang Tan Bronco ID: 007156760 Professor: Dr. Hossein Ahmadzadeh Date: 02.18.08 Abstract: This method of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to separate and identify compounds within an unknown liquid mixture. This could be used in the industrial world to figure out different compounds within ore or fuels found naturally and to see whether it contained certain desirable compounds. In natures’ resources, researchers use this method to decide whether/how a certain source can be used for energy purposes. An example would be how researches are still developing on how to modify certain natural resources to convert it for ‘Bio-diesel’. In order to do such things, one would be required to obtain the natural component (pure plant oil/vegetable oil), separate it into its various chemicals and match whether those components can be
