You have approximately 80 minutes to answer all of the following questions. You are permitted to use a double-sided sheet of paper in your own handwriting, a calculator, and a ruler. Put all questions on the sheets provided. Attempt all 5 questions as partial credit is given. Each question is worth 20 points. 1. Deriving the stress field around a screw dislocation You need the stress field of a screw dislocation and go to look it up in a text. You find the page showing a screw dislocation with Burgers vector b and line sense ξ both lying along the +z-axis, and centered at x = 0 and y = 0. The statement σ xz = σ zx = μ b 2 π y x 2 + y 2 is listed for the stress field but the next line σ yz = σ zy = ... is incomplete because someone tore out that portion of the page! Determine the expression for σ yz = σ zy via an equation of equilibrium for the bulk material around the dislocation. Note: You do not need to derive the equilibrium equation. Rather, you just need to cite it and use it to answer the question.
