Choon Liang Tan 02.04.08 BIO431 Lab Report #3 Introduction to Gamma Detectors 1. (Results shown in the three handouts of the spectra’s) 2. C + - C - = 420 – 382 = 0.0948 or 9.50% C o 401 FWHM of 9.5% is higher than the resolution that the manufacturer claims, which should’ve been between 6% and 8%. 3. Isotope: Channel #: Energy: (KeV) Cs 401 661.64 Na #1 314 511.003 Na #2 752 1274.50 Mn 500 834.827 Unknown #1 347.5 x 1 Unknown #2 632.2 x 2 The two energy values for the unknown peaks lie at those stated channel numbers, 347.5 and 632.2. In order to figure the energy values out accurately, a graph must be made between the energy (KeV) vs Channel # on y and x acid, respectively. (Graph 1.1: Correlation between Channel Number and Energy Levels of Isotopes) From the graph, the equation of the line for the trend line was: y = 1.744x – 37.105 4. To Determine the Unknown energies from the graph, one simply needs to plug in the channel numbers of the unknown sample into the equation of the linear trend
