KEY TERMS 1. Learning A relatively permanent change in behavior that results from experience. 2. Acquisition The initial stage in classical conditioning; the phase associating a neutral stimulus with an unconditioned stimulus so that the neutral stimulus comes to elicit a conditioned response. In operant conditioning, the strengthening of a reinforced response. 3. Extinction The diminishing of a conditioned response; occurs in classical conditioning when an unconditioned stimulus does not follow a conditioned stimulus; occurs in operant conditioning when a response is no longer reinforced. 4. Spontaneous recovery The reappearance, after a hiatus, of an extinguished conditioned response. 5. Generalization The tendency, once a response has been conditioned, for stimuli similar to the conditioned stimulus to elicit a similar response. 6. Discrimination- it refers to an ability to distinguish between a conditioned stimulus (CS) and other, similar stimuli that don't signal an unconditioned stimulus (US). 7. Classical conditioning A type of learning in which an organism comes to associate stimuli. A neutral stimulus that signals an unconditioned stimulus begins to produce a response that anticipates and prepares for the unconditioned stimulus. 8. Unconditioned stimulus A stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers a response (food in Pavlov's experiment). 9. Unconditioned response The unlearned, naturally occurring response to the unconditioned stimulus (natural salivation at the sight of food in Pavlov's experiment) 10. Conditioned response The learned response to a previously neutral (but now conditioned) stimulus (salivation at the sound of the tone in Pavlov's experiment). 11. Conditioned stimulus An originally irrelevant stimulus that, after association with an unconditioned stimulus, comes to trigger a conditioned response (the tone in Pavlov's experiment).
