1 A little more about Independent Samples t -tests • You know that one of the assumptions of an independent samples t -test is that the variances of the samples are equal. – We didn’t specifically test this assumption when we learned about it, but we can. • Say we are interested in seeing if there is a difference between poli sci and econ majors in the time they spend studying weekly. • How can we tell if these variance estimates are too difference to conclude that the homogeneity assumption is met? – Take a look at the output of the independent samples t -test 22.743 4.769 8.071 15 Poli Sci 36.041 6.003 11.975 15 Econ N Hours per week spent studying X s X 2 X s • You can see that the first values in the table is a test for the equality of variances and you have a F- value and a p -value (Sig.) – For this test, – So, since the p-value is greater than .05, you cannot reject the null, and you can assume that the homogeneity assumption holds.
