Kole Cox Ms.McLean English III Honors - Period 5 22 March 2016 Fear dictates the course of actions much more quickly than the brain can logically react to a situation. Scared is a superpower depending on the context. Fear can make one more alert, more agile, but also more susceptible to misconception. This theme is present in Things Fall Apart and is displayed in all characters, though it is expressed more so by Okonkwo. Fear drives the decision making process of Okonkwo, which is notable throughout Things Fall Apart. Okonkwo is fearful of few things, but what does frighten him is truly a terrifying. Okonkwo is clearly worried about his public figure, which is evident from the introduction. Okonkwo knows he must have authority and power over his family, however he is not always capable of hiding his act. “When Okonkwo heard that he would not eat any food he came into the hut with a big stick in his hand and stood over him while he swallowed his yams, trembling.
