Kole Cox Ms. McLean English III Honors - Period 5 17 February 2016 Of Mice And Men: The Latency of Nature John Steinbeck has composed a prodigious novel in which he develops emblematic characters and convoluted themes. The latency of nature in Of Mice And Men proposes that throughout their endeavours George and Lennie are exposed to and combat diverse versions of nature. Steinbeck illustrates this theme through countless literary devices, the devices which are most relevant to this theme are setting, imagery, character, and voice. Throughout Of Mice And Men, the setting is defined in great detail to drive the experiences that George and Lennie are familiar with. The location of the work farm that George and Lennie work on is significant because it along with the time period portrays what working life was like in the west during the mid 1930’s. The landscape of this work farm has relevance in the setting because it's both what dictates their work on the farm and what the farm was like in terms of living conditions. The area by the river where the book's opening scene takes place is depicted in great detail because the presence of nature there is important as it is a refuge, or a safe place for George and Lennie during the events in the book. The phrasing Steinbeck uses to describe the spot by the river is ingenious to say the least, “The flame of the sunset lifted from the mountaintops and dusk came into the valley, and a half darkness came in among the willows and the sycamores. A big carp rose to the surface of the pool, gulped air and then sank mysteriously into the dark water.” (11) The picture Steinbeck creates from his word choice and phrasing is so serene.
