Every leaf seems to speak.”-John MuirOn the pristine morn of April 21st, 1838, Daniel and Ann Muir were granted parenthood in Dunbar, Scotland. Their boy John was a peculiar child, learning rapidly and growing speedily. (Buske 8) John had a particularly strong bond with his father, one that would convince him to make a journey the United States and explore the lush wilderness’ the world has to offer. Thisman to be, contained some of the most controversial ideas, and extraordinary talents the world had yet known. He would one day aid in influencing the creation of a preservation system that would ultimately ensure that America stayed wild. (Wood 1994) John Muir began schooling at age three, enrolled in a small Catholic runschool. Muir advanced in school much more quickly than most other children and would often finish the day's work in the first two or three hours of the day. (Buske 10) He spent an extensive amount of time with his father who was a very religious man that believed the only book worth reading was the Holy Bible.Muir spent much of his free time in the open land near the Muir’s home, where he would study ant colonies and birds with their chicks. John had just advanced to the third grade when his parents decided to move and

(Buske 11) In the spring of 1849 when John Muir was 11 years old, his father Daniel, older brother and sister, sailed to America to claim a section of land and begin building their home. One year later in 1850,John’s mother, and three younger siblings came to join them in Wisconsin. John spent 10 years here with his family, working their land and wandering the woods near their farm. John knew a life that would have been familiar to any pioneer on any of America's frontiers. (Wood 1994) Muir acquired only 2 months of formal education over the span of the decade he had spent with his family in Wisconsin. Muir read as often as possible, visiting the public library near their home almost every day. His father was especial towards what his children were exposed to specifically that of books and literature. He permitted the works of Shakespeare and Milton, but did not consent to Plutarch until John convinced his father that it contained valuable dietary information. At the time, Daniel was pushing strict vegetarianism upon the family because of a shortage of game meat that year. The decade that Muir spent along with his family in Wisconsin, sparked inspiration for one of his early works, The Story of My Boyhood and Youth. The experiences of Wisconsin built a stable basis for a life which he would later choose to lead.
