Peter was born on june 9, 1672 he died in 1725. Peter ruled from 1682 to 1725. Peter the Great's summer imperial palace on the Gulf of Finland on Baltic Sea, is somewhat reminiscent of Versailles near Pais. Peter wanted to strenghen the military, expand Russian borders, and centralize royal power. To achieve his ends, he bought all of Russian institutions under his control, including the Church. He also forced the landowning nobles to serve the state in civilian or military posititions. Peter stipulated that landowning nobles shave off their beards, and forced them to replace their old-fashioned robles with Western-style clothes. He also passed laws ensuring that nobles retained control over their lands, including the serfs on those lands. He forced some serfs to become soliders or to work as laborers on government projects.
