Krishna Desai 10 CPA Am. History Loyola 3/6/2011 Could the Civil War Have Been Prevented In the movie, The Amistad, John Quincy Adams said, "Give us the courage to do what is right. And if it means Civil War? Then let is come. And when it does, may it be the, finally, the last battle of the American Revolution." In this movie, John Quincy Adams was correct about the future of the United States. Slavery did lead our nation to a Civil War that tore apart the country. In addition, he was correct that the Civil War was the last major battle of the American Revolution. During the mid-1800 - 1865, the nation was in a terrible state. The expansion just kept opening the deep wound known as slavery. The deep wound would never heal due to expansion and the belief known as Manifest Destiny. The 1800's also had a series of many poor leaders and presidents, until, one of the greatest president know as Abraham Lincoln was elected. However, by this time, it was too late. The Civil War could not have been prevented. The belief known as Manifest Destiny expanded our nation a just kept opening up the deep wound known as slavery. Manifest Destiny was used by people who claimed it was gods would for the US to expand all the way the Pacific Ocean. This belief was an excruciating factor in the Civil War. Every time we gained another piece of land, the issue over slavery kept on opening up again. This was first seen when Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Purchase that doubled the size of the Unites States. This also

doubled the slavery issue. A few years later, Missouri wanted to enter the country as a slave state. This was a problem because; the balance between Free states and slave states would be destroyed. Therefore, Henry Clay also known as, "The Great Compromiser," had devised a plan to settle the argument. This compromise was known as The Missouri Compromise that included the following: 1) Admit Missouri as a slave state 2) Admit Maine as a free state 3) Forbid slavery north of 36 o
