Kaitlyn Davis Sandra Posey IGE 120 8 AM November 2, 2006 The Body Ritual among the Nacirema How does one decide what to do for their civilization? What goes through people’s mind that tells them that they need a certain practice to cleanse them of evil or illness? “The Body Ritual among the Nacirema” is an interesting research about a culture that omits to pain to receive healing of all kind. They want to be pure and healthy, but undergo many practices and rituals that they feel can change them. I understand the Nacirema’s want to be pure and healthy, and also how they want to keep demons out. Anyone or any civilization wants that, but to what extent. The usage of shrines and potions is impractical to me. Most people today would say is it a bunch of “Hocus Pocus”, but these people really believed in it. They felt that by having these that they would be healed from the sickness of the world. I feel that their mind was, in a sense, controlling their body. They thought they were healed, but in reality
