Composition II 1270May 18, 2016“Young Goodman Brown” & “The Lottery”The first story I read called “Young Goodman Brown” the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne tells a story about a young man who traveled for one night only and as he strolled through a dark,gloomy forest, he felt afraid that there was evil spirits lurking around. Among other things, this story is about a dream that went from good to evil but it felt like reality. Shirley Jackson story “The Lottery” is sort a similar topic but from a different perspective. In Jackson story, the community gathers together once a year for the lottery. There is a black box that Mr. Summers brings out for the lottery containing folded piece of papers inside. Each person in the community draws a slip out the box and whoever draws the black dot wins by getting stoned to death. Both authors for each story tell readers the way both environments works to get them confused or to keep them guessing on how the story really end. Goodman Brown lived his life as a good Christian but after what happen in the forest with some of the community he lives in fear while Tessie in “The Lottery” is being hurt by the community throwing all types of stones at her.
