(Lecture 4) Absorption and Emission Very important as far as energy is concerned If an object radiates more energy than it absorbs it will turn colder If an object absorbs more energy than it radiates it will turn warmer Earth is a good example surface characteristics (color/texture) are very important o Color important because of Albedo A “Black Body” Object A perfect absorber (all the radiation it receives it absorbs) or a perfect emitter (emits the maximum radiation possible at a given temperature) Doesn’t have to be black in color Since both the sun and earth absorb and radiate with near 100% efficiency for their respective temperatures they both behave as “black body” objects o Know that both the earth and sun are “black body” objects Earth: day it absorbs at night it radiates o Black body in both directions (absorption and radiation) As a result: o The radiative equilibrium temperature is reached o The earth’s RET is 0 F and -18 C
