NURS 6512N-26: Advanced Health Assessment INITIAL POST Communication Techniques The patient I selected is the pre-school aged white female living in a rural community. Obtaining an accurate health history is extremely important when treating patients. When dealing with a pediatric patient, communication should focus on the child, but also include the caregivers (Ball, Dains, Flynn, Solomon, & Stewart, 2015). Observing the relationship between the child and caregiver is important, as well as noting how the caregiver responds to the child, as this can give clues to further issues the caregiver is facing, and can provide evidence of underlying problems needing to be addressed (Ball et al., 2015). Establishing a rapport with the child should include, physically, getting on their level, introducing yourself, and using terms they understand to decrease anxiety and fears (Ball et al., 2015).
