Reading Chaucer Unit Essay We have studied the class divisions of men and women in Chaucer’s society; the Theory of Four Humors; the sumptuary law; and the following tales: “Nun’s Priest’s Tale,” “Pardoner’s Tale,” and “The Miller’s Tale.” Choose one of these approaches to discuss in an essay: *In what way are modern American class divisions similar to, or different from, the estates in Chaucerian times? Describe a pilgrim from each estate, comparing or contrasting them with modern figures. *In what ways is the Theory of the Four Humors still relevant to looking at personality types today? In what way is it outdated? *Although luxury taxes still exist (on hotels, alcohol, cigarettes, fuel, eg.), we no longer restrict people’s dress through taxation. Do we still try to determine the social class someone belongs to based on his or her clothing? And do we limit what someone may wear based on social class?
