The book, “The Wizard of Oz” was published in 1900 by Lyman Frank Baum. LymanFrank Baum’s book was a blatant satire on the populist movement occurring in the America’sduring his time in South Dakota. The Populist Movement of the late 1800’s to the early 1900’scame about due to the poor economy raging through the land with the gold standard. In response,farmers banded together to protest and asked for an inflation in the form known as the silverstandard.At the beginning of the Populist Movement, farmers were the ones who were seen asgreatly affected. With the growing and monopolizing railroads, farmers had to pay large pricesfor transport. At the same time, the gold standard lowered the prices of farmers’ products andtherefore were slowly losing money. In the book, the yellow brick road symbolized the goldstandard.
