For problems 11.3a, b, & e from the text, draw the actual structures and circle the appropriate regions of the sugar to explain the stereochemistry in the question. a.) HO CH 2 C CH 2 HO O CH 2 HO O H HO H Dihydroxyacetone A ketose: Has a keto group and 2 hydroxyl groups. Diglyceraldehyde A aldose: Has a aldehyde group and 2 hydroxyl groups. b.) CHO OH H OH H H HO OH H CH 2 OH CHO H HO H HO OH H OH H CH 2 OH D-glucose D-mannose These are epimers because they differ in configuration at a single asymmetiric center (shown in red), which is not a carbonyl carbon (i.e. not C1)
