Molly Sheehan Part One Analysis In Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart , readers follow the story of Okonkwo, a fierce warrior and wealthy man living in the village of Umuofia. In part one of this book, we learn the history of Okonkwo as well as his village’s traditions. Okonkwo also begins to stray from the practices and rituals of the village, resulting in forms of punishment from the gods and the village elders. Part one focuses on Okonkwo’s demise from being one of the most powerful men in the village. I found part one to be interesting, to say the least. Even without the storyline that Okonkwo provides, it is a fascinating look into the culture of a group of people that most westerners would never have the chance to learn about. It is also a comparative between our social lives and the lives of the people within this story. I think it is important to read this story while being mindful of xenophobia – I do not think a
