Problem Set #3 Assigned: Monday, 10/8/2007 Due: Monday, 10/15/2007, 12:00 noon, in the drop box in OHE 430J. As always, no late homework is accepted for credit (you may turn in late homework, however, if you just want it graded.) Problem #1 (15 points) A front-end loader weighing 45,000 lbf as shown in the figure lifts a 7,500 lbf load of gravel. a) Determine the contact force between the front (left in the figure) wheels and the ground. Is the load on the front (left) wheels different from the rear (right) wheels? b) If the rear wheels are pinned rather than free to roll, would the loads change? c) If the wheels are NOT pinned, how heavy a load (i.e., how much more than 7500 lbf) can be carried before the loader will start to tip about its front wheels? Problem #2 (15 points) A horizontal beam has a pinned end at point A (that can sustain forces in the x and y directions but not a moment) and an additional brace CD is added with a roller end at point C and a clamped end at point D.
