AME 101 Fall 2007 Problem Set #2 Assigned: 9/21/2007 Due: 9/28/2007, 4:30 pm, in the drop box in OHE 430 Problem #1 (10 points) Water has a heat capacity (also called specific heat) of 1.000 calorie/gram˚C. Express this in units of BTU/lbm˚F. Problem #2 (15 points) A satellite in orbit around the earth requires about 90 minutes to complete one orbit. The altitude of the satellite is about 150 miles, and the radius of the earth is about 3950 miles, so the radius of the orbit is 3950 + 150 = 4100 miles. (a) Estimate the satellite’s orbital velocity in units of mph. (b) Determine the centrifugal acceleration caused by this velocity (c) Scrutinize the result (hint: put the result in units of earth gravity = 9.81 m/s 2 ). Problem #3 (15 points) I calculated the thrust (units of force) for a new type of jet engine as follows: Thrust = ˙ m Q R + u e " T e + u e 2 + u i ( ) # ( P e # 3 P i ) A e where ˙ m = mass flow rate (units kg/sec), Q R = fuel heating value (units Joules/kg), = ideal gas
