Unit III EssayAs an EHS Specialist for a large pipeline company, I see a lot of line strikes during excavationtasks. While we have stringent line locating procedures, probing procedures, training foroperators, and the requirement to have a spotter on hand during all digging operations, someline strikes cannot be avoided. In West, Texas and New Mexico, utility lines have been buried forthe better part of a century without any kind of mapping or responsibility to maintain somelines. Some non-steel lines that are no longer in use are difficult to locate, even with thethousands of dollars’ worth of equipment in use. Following a line strike, whether it be a locatedor unknown line, all operations cease and the scene is isolated. EHS is notified and evidence isrecorded.
