Notes 11/1 Alliances are created- triple alliance turkey, germany, Austria-hungry Triple GB, France, Russia July 1914 This is the breakdown of the early part of the 20 th century. It is these alliances that break down peace in Russia. France Ferdinand, heir to the thrown of Serbia, was assassinated, Germany gave Austria a blank check to assert its power in the Balkans to take control of situation and show that the Balkans had no power. The alliance wanted to prove their dominance in the region after the assassination. Domino Effect- Serbia receives an ultimatum that denounces their sovereignty (receives this from Austria-hungry) Serbia DENIES with Russian backing, this is where we get the domino effect. Russia then declares war on Austria-Hungry, the whole Russian army is mobilized, Russia know that its pals France will have to back them. Germany attacks through Belgium which GB does not allow so they then join in as well. With its triple All of these countries feel embolden to go to war because they know they have these alliances. Germany feels compelled to help Austria-hungry because they need to prove
