Composition and Function of the Blood Function: It transports substances between the body cells and the external environment/ Helps maintain a stable cellular environment. Blood and Blood cells 45% blood cells 55% plasma .When if you put your blood in a centerfuse .Blood is 3x thicker than water Red Blood Cells .Biconcave disks with shapes that increases surface area. . Contains hemoglobin, which combines w/ oxygen. . Also call Erythrocytes .4-6 million per mm3 blood . Transport Oxy. And help transport CO2 . 7-8 micrometer in diameter Destruction of Red Blood cells .Damaged red cells are phagocytized by macrophages in the liver and spleen. .Hemooglobin molecules from the red cells undergoing destruction are broken down into molecular subunits of HEME and Globin. .HEME is decomposed into iron and a greenish pigment called Biliverdin. Dietary Factors affecting Red Blood cell production .Vitamin B12 & Folic acid .are required for the synthesis of DNA .are needed by all cells for growth and reproduction .Iron .needed for hemoglobin synthesis
