(10 pts) A machine shop makes precision parts for model airplane engines. One of their manufactured pieces has a mean length of 10.80 mm, with a standard deviation of 0.062 mm. The engine company will only accept parts between 10.70 and 10.85 mm in length. What percentage of the manufactured parts will have to be rejected ? 2 . (10 pts) Harry measures the radius of a circle, R = 1.34 +/- 0.040 cm, following the two sigma or 95% confidence level standard. This represents a relative uncertainty of +/-0.040/1.34 = +/-3.0%. He then calculates the area of the circle. He reasons that the area will have the same relative uncertainty as the radius measurement since there is only one independent variable in the equation, so he reports his area as A = 5.64 +/- 0.17 cm 2 . But Harry’s answer is incorrect ! Write the correct area in standard engineering form, i.e., A = _________+/- _________ cm 2 . 3 . (15 pts) A power supply with an output impedance of 4.5 Ω produces a voltage of exactly 8.000 V internally. The output voltage is read into a cheap 12-bit A/D converter with a range of 0 to 10 V.
