(10 pts) A white dot is painted on a pulley, and a stroboscopic tachometer is used to measure (infer) the rpm of the pulley. The entire pulley is visible, and the room is dark except when the strobe light flashes. For each case below, describe what the observer would see – specifically, how many “frozen” dots and whether there is aliasing or not. [Sketches are sometimes useful, as discussed in class, but not required.] ( a ) Pulley rotates at 3600 rpm; strobe flashes at 720 rpm. ( b ) Pulley rotates at 3600 rpm; strobe flashes at 2880 rpm. (10 pts) Harry, a police officer, sets himself up with his radar gun to catch speeders along I-81, where the speed limit is 65 mph. Because of the curves and hills, the best he can do is to position himself at a 25 o angle with respect to oncoming traffic. The radar gun operates at a frequency of 16,000 MHz. ( a ) If you are driving at the speed limit, calculate the Doppler frequency Harry would measure with his radar gun. ( b ) If Harry does not correct for angle (he assumes the angle is zero), what is the maximum speed you can “get away with” such that Harry thinks you are still driving within the speed limit?
