(15 pts) In a fluid mechanics experiment, time t is found to be proportional to length b squared divided by kinematic viscosity ν : 2 0 128 b t. = . At standard operating conditions, b = 0.0135 +/- 0.0013 m and = 1.52 x 10 -5 +/- 0.28 x 10 -5 m 2 /s. ( a ) Write the time in standard engineering form, in units of seconds. ( b ) Suppose the error in calculation of t is too large for your project, but you have funds to improve the measurement of only one of the variables ( b or ). Which one of these variables contributes the most to the error in calculation of t , and thus for which one should the measurement be improved? Justify your answer. 2 . (15 pts) Gary is using a 12-bit A/D converter with a range of -10 to 10 V. His input signal comes from a pressure transducer, and has a range of -15 to 15 mV. Gary also has an amplifier circuit (output = G input, where G is the gain of the amplifier) which he installs in series between the transducer output and the A/D converter input. A switch on the amplifier enables him to select the gain as G = 10, 100, or 1000. ( a ) Which gain should Gary use to minimize the effect of quantization errors – in other words, to be able to utilize as much of the range of the A/D as possible, so as to sample data with the best precision?
