Lecture #2 17:01 Nervous System I -neurotransmitters D. Neurotransmitters and their receptors Can be excitatory (causing depolarization of the membrane on post synaptic  dendrite) Or inhibitory (causing hyperpolarization) 2 types of receptors     o ionotropic (exerts control)= ligand gated ion channels hooked up to  receptors  rapid effects o metabotropic = activates signal transduction pathway when NT binds to  receptor (work more slowly than ionotropic receptors) 1. Acetylcholine (Ach)  a.) nicotinic cholinergic receptor i. Ionotropic ii. Excitatory iii. Neuromuscular junction (where nerve meets skeletal muscle) iv. Autonomic neurons (involuntary stuff) v. Central nervous system (CNS) vi. Nicotine acts as agonist (opposite of antagonist; mimics Ach) b.) Muscarinic cholinergic receptors vii. Metabotropic viii.Excitatory or inhibitory ix. Smooth and cardiac muscle and endocrine and exocrine glands
