Kristoffer S. Jacob Extra Credit # 2 Desertion : Abdulrazak Gurnah’s novel, Desertion , is takes place in 1899 and is set in the Swahili coast. The novel retells the illicit love-affair between Martin, an Englishman, and Rehanna, an Afro-Indian. In the end, Rehanna elopes to be with Martin, who eventually leaves an impregnated Rehanna to go back to England. The novel then skips forward to about 50 years later; however, even after 50 years Rehanna’s family is still considered immoral and dishonorable. At this junction of the novel, it becomes clear that the narrator is Rashid, an African who grew up in the Swahili coast but moves to England to finish his education. Coincidentally, Rashid’s brother, Amin, falls in love with Rehanna’s granddaughter, Jamil. After Rashid’s parents find out about Amin’s relationship with Jamil, they pressure Amin to terminate his relationship with Jamil for the sake of the family’s honor.
