The study of human behavior and society, a social science Can study a topic from all different perspectives (different social sciences) Sociologists study a broad range of phenomena – from small group interactions and the meaning of cultural symbols to large-scale economic shifts Structural (macro) versus interactional (micro) sociology Qualitative versus quantitative sociological research o Quantitative – statistical methodology, predictive models of behavior o Qualitative – historical observation, participant observation The “Sociological Imagination” C Wright Mills o The relationship between history and biography in society o How we understand our individual lives in the context of large, powerful social forces o Interplay between individual and history Human behavior is shaped by social interaction in the groups to which people belong Larger society and membership in social groups shape individual behavior How Do We Explain Behavior?
