Maia Williams Robert Choflet Black Culture in the US 24 February 2017 Journal Entry 1: The Quest for Control The first chapter of the book Black Culture and Black Consciousness , by Lawrence W. Levine is called the Sacred World of Black Slaves. It is compiled of an array of culture that the enslaved blacks brought with them, or cultivated.The author examines this through the view of music, spirituals, and storytelling. This particular section examines folk beliefs, music, and religion. The main purpose of this chapter is to provide the reader with historical context and background on the slaves lives and the negro musical influence. Levine argues the differences between white and black oriented songs, how they were created or passed down, and how they are interpreted. Levine argues that although they look similar, black spirituals are influenced by their own specific beliefs. To support this argument, Levine includes songs that former slaves used to sing,
