Week 8 DiscussionStacy PohlmanBackgroundHuman Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a worldwide epidemic. Since the first identified case in 1981 the course of the disease has changed dramatically. HIV used to be knownsynonymously with AIDS. It was initially thought of as an “homosexual or IV drug user disease”. Diagnosis at that time was a death sentence. Therapy was aimed at minimization of symptoms. There was no therapy aimed at minimizing the virus in a patients system. Since the emergence of ART’s the life expectancy of a patient living with HIV has dramatically increased and the public concern for the epidemic has dramatically decreased. HIV Disease and TreatmentHIV is diagnosed as early as 2-3 weeks after transmission. Patient present with flu like symptoms but the differentiating factor is the presence of virus in the plasma. ART is not a curative therapy. It supresses the replication of the virus (Arcangelo & Peterson, 2013).The first antiretroviral (ARV) was licensed in the late 1980s and since then over 20 drugs from different classes have been approved (Scourfield et al, 2011).
