1 ME 416 Computer Assisted Design of Thermal Systems Practice Problems #2 Turbomachinery Problems 1. An actual centrifugal compressor with a pressure ratio of 7 compresses air at 98 kPa, 295 K and 16.4 kg/s. Determine the power required and isentropic efficiency. 2. Two compressor systems are being considered for a gas turbine plant. The first is a single stage with a 12:1 pressure ratio and isentropic efficiency of 85%. The second is a two stage with intercooling. The intercooler has an effectiveness of 0.8 and inlet air is used as the cooling fluid. The first stage has a pressure ratio of 6.5:1 and isentropic efficiency of 85% and the second stage has a pressure ratio of 1.85:1 and isentropic efficiency of 95%. Calculate the work required for each compressor system. Inlet conditions may be taken at 300 K and 100 kPa. 3. A forward curved blade fan moves 5 m 3 /s of air with a pressure boost of 0.8 kPa. Determine the efficiency of the fan. 4.
