Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight Clifford Geertz’s, “Deep play: notes on the Balinese cockfight” is a commentary on Balinese culture. Geertz began by telling how in the Balinese culture he is consider an outsider and due to this status he is ignored by everyone. However, during an illegal cockfight that was raid by the police Geertz, instead of showing his identification as American (which would have easily liberated him from any arrest); decides to flee authority just as the rest of the Balinese people had done. Through this course of action Geertz, was accepted in to their culture and was able to further submerse himself within the Balinese culture and began to understand just how important cockfighting was to them. Cockfighting holds a high significance to the Balinese men as it symbolized their masculinity. Geertz describes the Balinese men in having a “deep psychological identification” with their cocks and the “double entendre is deliberate.” So when Balinese men gather around
