Draw a Timeline of major events of the 80s and 90s and synthesize them through the decades in a paragraph. The videos along with chapter 14 and 15 in our textbook included topics and events that correspond to the 1980s and 1990s. During this time, many Mexican Americans were battling for their equality in the Unites States even though the population of various immigrants and races grew. These minorities faced racism almost everywhere they went besides their neighborhood and were even stripped of basic rights if they were in a certain area. Not only was it tough for them, but there was hardly anything that they can do as they were not allowed to voice their opinion when it came to anything political or in the political system. The video discussing women in Chicano studies shows the work in women trying to make their position valid and equal to men in politics. There was an extreme gender gap and it showed when it came to voting. Even when a woman would want to run to be apart of the Democratic Races, their run for candidacy would be cut short as often times there was always a lack of funds to promote for candidacy. In our text that relates to the video is that it would be a really rare occasion for a Mexican American women to classify themselves on the same level as a Republican Party and some Mexican American men might. Most notable to this day, and basically a celebrity for his activistism is Cesar Chavez. He was an amazing public figure and created a legacy for himself for Mexican Americans in the workforce. One of the video discussed justice for the janitors, where they were trying to get all janitors to be paid equally. There was a strike the later broke out and it documents LAPD being abusive during the picket lines of the strike. During this time, the economy was not much help as the division between the different classes did not allow for assistance. However, President Reagan tried to fix this division through what he called “Reaganomics”, this economic policy was to try reduce government spending, reduce federal income tax, reduce capital gains tax, reduce government regulation and to constrict the money supply so that inflation does not rise. It was not the greatest or worst policy, however made the anyone below the middle class suffer as now the middle class was somewhat considered poor. 1980: Ronald Reagan gets elected as President 1981: San Antonio makes history with Henry Cisneros as its first Mexican Mayor in history 1982: Mexico’s economy failed and Reagan’s “Reaganomics” was enforced 1986: Nativism was still very much prominent and Prop 63 was passed in California and English became the official language 1987: Union workers went on strike 1988: President George H. W. Bush was elected President of the United States 1989: San Diego builds a border distinguishing Mexico and the United States
1990: Cold War ends 1991:
